With the compact size and small desktop footprint the stylus SX400 is the perfect solution for those looking for the functionality of a printer, scanner and copier without takes up too much space. The SX400 not only offers all of these things for an affordable price but also offers direct printing from memory cards and digital cameras and documents copying with the need for a PC. If you want to get the best out of the SX400 and access all it has to offer it best to use it with a PC. The scanner has an impressive 1200dpi resolution which enables it to produces great quality scans on a variety of different documents including photos for which t comes with editing software. The photocopier also makes use of the impressive scanner and produces copies in standard resolution for a good balance of speed and quality. The area in which the SX400 really shines is in its print quality which is amazingly good considering the price of this device, anything from and basic pages of text to a high resolution borderless photo print is pin sharp and full of vivid colour tones. The speed in which it prints is less impressive however and although inkjet printers in general are not own for their speed, the SX400 is slower than average. Running costs for the SX400 are depend on which type of printer ink cartridges you use, genuine Epson SX400 ink cartridges will set you back over £30 for a set of four while the compatible Epson ink cost half the price at £15.

The Stylus D92 is a budget entry level inkjet printer from Epson and the first thing you should do being buying one is to check the price of the printer ink cartridges. Budget printers are notorious for being expensive to run and looking at the prices of Epson D92 ink cartridges on the net the genuine Epson printer cartridges cost just as much as the printer does. Compatible inks are available for the D92 and they appear to offer far better value. The quality of print produced by the Stylus D92 is pretty average but its what you would expect from a printer in this range, the speed in which it prints is a different matter however. Epson claim in the specifications of the D92 that its capable of producing 25 pages per minute of plain black text in draft quality mode, for starters the print is so fiat in draft quality mode that its barely readable and real world test have shown that its only capable of printing 7 pages per minute and 2.5 in standard quality mode which is the minimum required if you actually want to read the text that’s been printed. Epson also say that the D92 can print photos, this is true and it prints them with average quality but again it let down by the speed in which it prints them – A 6×4 photo takes over five minutes to print from start to finish. The Stylus D92 could have been a great little printer had Epson made it print a lot quicker instead it hard to see that this print would suit anyone’s needs.

The Samsung CLP-300 is the first colour laser printer to be designed for the home and small office user in mind. It sort of a half way house between an inkjet printer and laser printer. In doing this is makes it affordable to the home and small office user as do the Samsung CLP-300 toner cartridges costing around twice what you would pay for a two sets of printer cartridges for an inkjet printer. The first that strikes you about the Samsung CLP-300 is it size, its tiny, and Samsung have done amazingly well to fit so much into so little space. The CLP-300’s footprint is not much bigger than a standard inkjet printer and although not the most attractive thing in the world it seems to be very well designed. One of the reasons they have managed to make it so small is reducing the size of the Samsung toner cartridges which are now about the size of a small Pringles tube. The downside of this is they yield less pages 2,000 pages for the black and 1,000 for each of the colours but they still offer good value printing with a cost per page of 1.8p for black printing and a slightly more expensive 8.7p for colour. Print quality would b described as not bad, it no where near as good as your average colour laser print but seems to print black well and struggle slightly with colour prints. This is the case when it comes to speed to, black documents print at a speed of 16ppm while the CLP-300 can only manage 4ppm when printing colour. Overall the CLP-300 is a good printer for the money and it does what it set out to do and that’s sit between an inkjet printer and a colour laser in terms of price and this is reflected in the performance.
